I don't usually review poetry books. In fact, this is only the second one I've ever written a review for. I'm not sure if anyone will read this review but I want whomever does to know right off that this book is an addictive page-turner that will give you chills to your bone. At first I wondered if it was cool in the room where I was reading the book. Then as I continued to turn the pages of this compulsively readable book, I realized that the lines of poetry were going right through me like lightning bolts, giving me goose bumps, and making me exclaim aloud or sit in silence shaking my head at their power. I was struck by the naked honesty that she lets out in a rhythm that I easily imagined being spoken aloud as I read. I also grooved on the haunting visuals she creates with the verses in her poems, such as in "Piehole" and "Hurricane." Angie Ward doesn't add words that don't need to be in poems. There's no temptation to skim through any of her work. Every word that's in each of her poems needs to be there, and she hit me again and again with hidden parts of myself that I wouldn't have known how to express or been brave enough to do so. In "Ode to the Runaway, One Pill at a Time," one of my favorite poems of hers which I identified with in so many ways, she writes, "I eat Skittles in the order of/ my favorite color/ Red, then orange, then purple./ Green and yellow only if desperate,/ or bored." As I put down the book, after reading it in one sitting as there was no other choice once I started, I reflected on how all of the poems in this collection are red ones. You won't be able to read some, put the book down, and save the others for later. Angie Ward's poems jump off the page and nest in your soul, every one of them.Product details

PIT Poems from the Scar Angie Ward 9781453825112 Books Reviews
Angie Ward takes me home to her front porch every time I open her potent volume; Pit, is a wonderful treasure. Like a diamond this book is a delight for the eyes, but has the strength to cut through entrenched misconceptions and other steel strong substances. It takes a fine mind to elegantly build a bridge which carries me to places I have either dreaded or dreamed of and it takes great compassion to carry me back to myself when she's done. I feel fortunate to hold this book in my hand and in my soul. I very much look forward to her next book!
