A young Frenchman and a young Englishwoman are caught in the wild plots and counterplots surrounding the Bourbon conspiracy against Francis I in 16th century France. Complete with rich pageantry, a jealousy-maddened king, an evil nobleman, Sire Francois the Sorcerer, wolf hounds and mad gallops across the French countryside, master story teller and scholar, Samuel Shellabarger has once again created an adventure and suspense story that never falters.
Shellabarger's style of writing is refreshing for its compact, richly painted, and realistic dialog (with just the right touch of French); concise but informative narrative; and most importantly, a story that is flawlessly balanced and always compelling. His work has the enthusiasm of Alexander Dumas without the early 19th century verbosity of style.
Nothing to weigh you down and everything you could ever ask for from a swashbuckling historical romance.

The King's Cavalier contains many elements that I value in Shellabarger's historical novels - careful research combined with fictitious and real characters gives a sense of what it might have been like to live in another place and time - in this case, France during the period when nobles and monarch were in their power struggle (centralization vs. decentralization). Many of the diplomatic themes have relevance today. How should one decide whom to support, if the idea of a unifying monarchy has appeal, but the current monarch is a playboy more interested in hunting, feasts and chasing women than in making fair decisions about his kingdom's laws? Can wise advisors fill the gap? Or would it be better for the nobles to retain their traditional powers and control over the personal lives of those in their region? While not as impressive overall as Lord Vanity and Prince of Foxes, this is still a good novel for anyone who appreciates Shellabarger's dramatic approach to history.

The King Cavalier edition by Samuel Shellabarger Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
While not quite as brilliant as Prince of Foxes or Captain from Castile, The King's Cavalier is a very enjoyable read. Blaise de Lalliere is the hero and he really is the foundation of the story. If you've already read Shellabarger's best, then take a look at the King's Cavalier.
THE KING'S CAVALIER is in the same tradition of rich pageantry, high adventure, and unforgettable romance. Against the violent background of 16th century France, he tells the thrill-packed story of Blaise de Lalliere, an impulsive young night who fell in love with the one girl he should never have dreamed of -- Anne Russell, the beautiful redhead desired by the King himself! What happens when Blaise and Anne flee across France, sharing the intimacies of their hazardous journey, and pursued by the ruthless forces of the jealousy-maddened King, makes an adventure and suspense story that never falters -- and a love story you will never forget!
I first read this book many years ago when I was a teenager, so barely remembered it. I have just finished rereading it and really enjoyed it. It has adventure, intrigue, romance, tragedy. There are a lot of plot twists, but the author is able to bring them together at the end in an unlikely way I didn't see coming. Recommended for those who like historical adventure novels.
I Was informed that this was somewhat based on our family.
Good, old-fashioned swashbuckler, entertaining, historically valid. Adventure in its original meaning.
recommended read,
if you have read Shellabargers other novels, you will like this one.
I absolutely LOVE everything by Samuel Shellabarger. His books are where I learn my history.
